Work and Pray

Less than 24 hours to go until the polls open tomorrow morning. Now is the time to take one last look at what we can do to give Carl, Tavi, Manuela, Wayne and Al every possible vote. Is there anyone you can still call or talk to in person? Do you know someone who needs a ride? Is there someone you know who is confused about the issues or facts surrounding this year’s election? These are all questions we can go over one final time, to make sure there’s nothing we missed, but it’s not likely we have, not at this late stage.

There is, however, one thing we can do.

I spent my high school years at Coleman Catholic in Kingston where we were taught by the Marist Brothers. Their slogan was “Ora et Labora” or “Pray and Work.” No one can doubt the number of hours we have all put into this campaign or the intensity of our work. We can be justifiably proud of what we have done and what we’re about to achieve, but what about the other side of the equation?

Prayer is one of the greatest forces influencing mankind throughout our history. The Declaration of Independence tells us that we are endowed with our Inalienable Rights by our Creator. Our Constitution talks about the “Blessings of Liberty.” Not gifts, but blessings, which can only come from God.

Our Founding Fathers believed in a God Who took personal interest in the course of humanity. While giving his farewell address, George Washington declared “You can't have National Morality apart from religious principle.” Thomas Jefferson called the Bible the “Cornerstone for American Liberty.” James Madison said, “We've staked our future on our ability to follow The Ten Commandments with all our heart.”

Prayer and a deep and abiding faith in the God Who answers our pleadings has long been the engine which drove this nation forward. Even the work of our hands was inspired by sayings such as “God helps those who help themselves.”

That same God directs us to love those who have done us harm, to turn our backs on hatred and spite. He also tells us to defend those who are being harmed. With clean consciences, we can and will remove from positions of power those who are destroying our Town. Just as important is our ability to forgive them the damage they have done us, all the times when they disregarded our rights and trampled on our freedoms. We forgive them because hate and anger will eat away at our own spirits.

We have done everything we can. The work is finished. All that is left is prayer.

Let us pray that God will Touch our neighbors’ hearts and bring them to the polls tomorrow. Let us pray for a new, brighter future for our Town. Let us pray for the strength and Grace to forgive our opponents and Love them as God Wills.

Let us pray for both victory and for the ability to show the other side compassion.

God willing, we will emerge from years of darkness tomorrow night.

God willing, our Town will move forward into light, towards a future bright and full of hope and unity.

God willing.

i'm praying for you, anonymous. you must be a sorry soul to be so nasty.
in the end, all this politics means nothing. in the end, it's being nice that counts.
God Bless you, anonymous.

ruthie: go back to jersey. you fit in there. zali: go back to maryland: they are known for their crabs, and you are a BIG one.

alysse being nice does count...you should try it just a little...

This is what the town has turned into with the arrogance of those who have moved here trying to impose their way of thinking on a town that was just find before them and will continue to be after them.
If anyone one is nasty it is you and not Alysse.
Remember what goes around comes around may not be today or tomarrow but eventually karma is going to come back at you.
Have some respect that is what good old small town country values are.

you will lose again, most of my Republican friends all see through
your sick lies.

Self enrichment led by the boys who have the most to lose as their corrupt ways are growing harder to sleaze by.
If you all came from Brooklyn you would be known as street thugs, hiding behind god.

Everyone seems to have brought into Fornal’s propaganda. That it is the new comer against the old timers. Again, it is time to repeat; Manuela and Tavi have lived here less time then Fornal or Duke. What M/T represents it is not the old timers against the new comers, but those respect our values and past against those who think they know better then anyone else. Pray, cross your fingers, hope, do whatever it is to help the day end in a community taking back its' soul.

ya know, in national politics, where the stakes are much higher, they don't resort to the nastiness i read here. national politicians don't lower themselves to that.
tomorrow will come & whatever is meant to be will be. we'll go back to our lives, our businesses, & our families. we'll all work together to keep rochester the wonderful place it is to live, work & raise our children.

How come the only elections results not posted in any newspaper is for the TOWN OF ROCHESTER seems like another liberal conspiracy!!!

dukas said...

It looks like Pam has yet to concede, or has lost the ability to speak. Neither matter, there are not enough mail-ins the whole of Ulster County for her ideologues to steal these elections; such was the overwhelming rebellion that took place last night.
Rochester will get its own special analysis. Last night’s Republican/Conservative/United Rochester victory will go down in the annals of Ulster County’s history. The story of a small sleepy town that woke up in time to rediscover what true community spirit means.
Rochester maintains its own uniqueness; Republicans, Democrats and free thinkers all, step into the future unencumbered, beyond control of limited ideology, to encompass the dreams of all.
God Bless America... as God continues to Bless Rochester.

YES!!! God Bless America & God Bless our 'sleepy little town' & all the WONDERFUL people in it.
'It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice'.
Enjoy the day, everyone.

Oh yes what a wonderful day it is to wake up a know that the United Rochester movement was successful, and that the people's voice has been heard.

You missed the whole point of the election last night 3 anonymous past. There are no bosses in last night’s winners, there are only those that are willing to accept the responsibility of responsible behavior. Last night it was neighbors, not ideologues that won. Within your own heart, you must find your own responsibility to your neighbor. If you want to go around with a defeatist attitude or encourage an attitude of narcissism and the need to control, that’s your choice but you’ll find it more difficult to bullshit people. Around here the era of selfishness is drawing to a close. Water the attitude of respect for your neighbors and it will grow. Your path is yours to choose, such is our God given right. We all did our best last evening but even the most assured recognized, the angels lent a hand.

i'm all for celebrating the election results. in my opinion, nice won & nasty lost.
but, let's not lower ourselves & gloat. let's do what the sign says: UNITE ROCHESTER.

AMEN Alysse.

Nicely put Alysse. But can't we gloat a little???

Clearly, there's nastiness on all sides (not BOTH sides because there's more than two sides in this town). Some Republicans are mean-spirited; some Democrats are mean-spirited. Some Independents probably are mean-spirited. I also think some people on all sides are short-sighted. As soon as a person starts speaking about "They," I know that person does not see individuals but just some "blob" of misconception. Prejudice and presumption blind many people of all persuasions in this town.

It's good to hear a little gentleness in Mr. Dukas's voice, by the way.

I believe every person is good in heart, and I also know every one of us suffers. We just act out on that suffering differently.

Okay, put the psychology aside: My questions are, "What's the new Town Board's plan and priorities?" "How does the Town Board plan to encourage economic development without surrendering our town to outside developers?" "How can the Town Board encourage more community spirit among all classes & backgrounds of people?"

I agree that the previous (or current?) Town Board made some mistakes in how they went about trying to make their plans happen. But none of us wants the sort-of "hands-off" approach of some earlier Town Boards, either, do we? (Maybe that worked in the past but maybe not for everyone in town. I don't know.)

How do we bring people together? How do we make sure, too, that the Town Board serves us and not just a new few?

Good day.

To the Olive branching Anonymous; I’m a nice guy, just misunderstood
And if you don’t know, what is the question?
All of God’s children are mean spirited,
the only healing needed is those who are licking their wounds.
And why must we react to a town’s heart beat through your perception of reality?
Priority, priority, priority, the real estate of the mind. What’s the rush?
Don’t you understand Zali Win is an outside developer
and Pam Duke pushed her way to the front of the line?
The Town Board can encourage by not staging performances,
and by staying out of the way and balancing responsibilities, that would be nice, no?
Anonymous, not to ignore your questions,
but can’t you stop your hypothetical approach and acknowledge that trees hibernate?
The mistake this Town Board made is they set out to manipulate; which is a behavioral fault.
The urgent need to know and control an immaterialized future, house’s one in a hindsight spirit.
And personal justifications in a public arena can come off as overbearing.
Just assume nobody is going to let anybody dump 200 houses on anybody’s head, without asking first.
And if you have any questions about the style and objective of the new administration,
talk to Carl, it’s his turn to deal.

I hope someone asks the state to come in and investigate some of the corrupt deals the previous town board entered..

Anonymous said...

hmmm...zali's board involved in corruption? gee, what are the chances...

Anonymous said...

I'd say the chances are VERY good.

~ alysse ~ said...

pam lied tonight in front of a roomful of people. she said carl sent her a letter, which is not true. he sent her NO letter.
she might have trouble with the truth, but when it comes to corruption, well.... that's serious, & i will wait for the newly elected board to deal with it, if they choose to do so. this is still America & we are ALL innocent until proven otherwise.
i, for one, will not comment on any alleged corruption because i do not know all the facts.

dear mr. dukas (and others),

i was heartened when i read the posts from wednesday that seemed good spirited. i'm honestly just asking some questions. i'm not trying to be clever or under-handed or whatever. i read imre's blog entry at face value. i do appreciate your points and am seeking some additional voices of reason out there. yes, trees hibernate. i get it. let's rest. let's stop doing too much, too fast. i can appreciate that. i also realize that NEITHER party ran on much of a campaign of substance. one said they'd keep doing what they're doing; the other said they'd stop them from doing what they're doing. other than that...? so, i was just curious if anyone knew what the new board planned. that's all. now, i hope these comments don't raise anyone's ire who has to shoot off some insult. just imagine we're in your living room having a conversation.(i'm sure someone will have a good smart-a** comment about that, too.)

yes, we'll ask carl some questions. meanwhile, let's have rational exchanges on this blog without resorting to name calling and suspecting there's an enemy in our midst.

good day.

-the olive branch-carrying anonymous.

LOL

Anonymous said...

Mr. Anonymous, are you trying to smooth things over so we'll all forget & stop the investigation of your board before it begins?

Olive wood, is a hard wood, it beautiful holds a sculpture’s intent. It is easy to disagree with meanings of substance and viewpoints of generalities, yet this was a very important election, many knew that, intellectually or intuitively.
There is nothing from this election I personally wanted, except honesty and openness, where previously there was none.
And if one does not think those are substantial substances, I don’t know what else there is to say.
Posting anonymously gives one greater liberty, but less credibility, which makes them difficult to address.
It is time to breathe, meditate, think, and pray, judgments reserved for another day.
I have no apologies for anything I have written. Some deserved all the wrath I could summon, and others whose intent were honest, caught a lot of flack. However, lines were drawn and sides predetermined, leaving us to bury the dead and heal the wounded.
Everyone has their own personal vision of the future, none are right, none are wrong. It’s the meantime that counts; it is time to unite as a community, to protect and defend and check egos at the door.

When PD won 4 years ago, Harold Lipton called her and congratulated her. He spent weeks teaching her the technical facts about running a Town.

PD has not called Carl, hasn't congratulated him and gave him a paycut as a way of spitting on all of us.

Low class all the way.

Anonymous said...

Pam hasn't had the time to call Carl because she's been too busy renting a moving truck & buying real estate in Maryland next to Frances.

Anonymous said...

Pam shouln't worry about renting a moving van. I'm sure any one of us would be glad to pack her up and move her out. Oh, thats right, we already did!

Anonymous said...

Thanks, Mr. Dukas, for your thoughtful reply. I agree - let's all unite and heal. (and I am not from any other side, am not a defender or detractor of the board)

No, Mr. another Anonymous, I don't have a board to defend. I was just wanting to discuss some matters, that's all. Just because someone has a different view or raises a question does not outrightly make that person an enemy.

It's true that those people who have disagreed with the views often expressed on this site have been insulting toward you. That's not my way.

As for the anonymous factor, I understand that anonymity in this case might lead to suspicion that I have a covert intention. I don't. And as Mr. Beke would be the first to tell us, the authors of the Federalist Papers - Madison, Hamilton, and Jay - that would become the basis for our Constitution originally published these papers under the pseudonym "Publius." I'm no match for these brilliant thinkers; I'm just observing that pseudonymns and anonymity are a time-honored part of Americans' freedom of speech and freedom of press.

I appreciate this forum. That's all.

dukas said...

Sorry, don't check your ego at the door.

Anonymous said...

Come on Dukas....you know who "anonymous" is as well as I do!

I'd like to make a suggestion to Mr. Beke, please set up an open forum so that everyone can blog in one location. I'm trying not to miss out on any of the entertainment, it is rather difficult when I have to continue to watch the older blogs for added comments.

I'm not as high-tech or computer literate as the rest of you so it makes it a bit difficult for me. Heck, I'm one of the people that thought that Manuela's (what's her last name) porn site was on TV.....boy don't I feel foolish now!! :)

dukas said...

Don't like the next blog, this is as far as I go.
Anonymous, you assume from that which is not yours, I don’t appreciated being manipulated from either, foe or friend. I would think at this stage, you’d want me to keep my mouth shut. Unless of course, it benefits you and later for that.
